Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC) was established on July 1, 1976 by incorporating Bangladesh Steel Mills Corporation and Bangladesh Engineering & Shipbuilding Corporation. At present 9 industrial units are in operation. These are : Atlas Bangladesh Ltd., National Tubes Ltd., Eastern Cables Ltd., Eastern Tubes Ltd., Gazi Wires Ltd., General Electric Manufacturing Company Ltd., Bangladesh Blade Factory Ltd., Chittagong Dry Dock Ltd., and Pragoti Industries Ltd. The main products are: GI \ MS \ API pipes, transformers, electric cables and conductors, super enamelled copper wire, fluorescent tube light, razor blades, portable steel bridge, assembled bus, truck, jeep, motorcycle and mishuk (Tri-wheeler) . BSEC also provides repair facilities for different kinds of riverine vessels and docking facilities to sea/ocean going vessels. Over the last five years the average yearly profit earned by BSEC was Tk. 250.88 million. Presently BSEC Head Office and its 9 operating enterprises has an employment-strength of 2710 personnel in various categories. The average yearly (2002-2007) contribution of BSEC to the National exchequer was Tk.6014.10 million. In open and free market economy, amidst highly competitive market, as a state-owned corporation, it is committed to enhance the level of performance in future.
BSEC is established with the objective to contribute to the development of infrastructural facilities of the country, create the base for industrial growth, make human and material movement faster and easier, and help utilize sea and river transportation system.
